Making, Writing, Observing

Illa Jang’s work has taken different forms over the years, moving through music, writing, performance, and collaborative cultural projects.

Her practice began in the arts. As a recording artist, songwriter, and producer, she worked across sound, words, visual direction, and performance. She also spent several years mentoring young street artists and developing performance and community projects.

Writing later became another important part of her practice. Her longstanding interest in people and emotion led to her first science fiction novel, 네오젠; 미완성국가 (Neozen; Unfinished), published in 2022. The story imagines a society where the capacity to feel emotion determines social class.

Her career later took an unexpected turn into medical aesthetics, offering a different perspective on beauty. Working inside the industry, she began to observe how cultural ideas about appearance become personal desires and influence how people see and make choices about their bodies.

Across these different paths runs a common interest: the relationship between individual experience and the culture around it.

Today, her work is returning to its creative and cultural roots, bringing together writing, music, and an ongoing interest in how individual experience is shaped by culture. Her current work includes 취향의 이면 (Behind Taste), an independent writing project that looks beyond everyday tastes and choices to the cultural and social influences behind them.
